“Play?” she asked, and then shrugged. Children weren’t her strong point. She understood the basics, but at times, she felt like she was awkward around them. “I’m not sure I’m fit to play…”
James’ eyebrows knitted together at the response. “But anyone can play,” The child pleaded. Had James done something wrong? Had he pushed her away? “… Do you not want play with me?”
If she didn’t want too, why not just say so?

If she knew exactly how to handle children, then she would have probably answered his first question with a yes. Even when Elysia had been born and Hughes had placed the young child in Riza’s arms, she could only stare at her. A silent plea for advice shown in her eyes as she looked at Hughes and he understood. She should be able to move on, accept things, but that was always easier said than done. “It’s not that,” she began, trying to think of how to explain things. For a child though, it would be too hard to understand.

“It just that I didn’t know what games to play,” she said, choosing for the moment to play along. “What did you have in mind?” she asked, a faint smile playing at her lips.

“Colonel,” she began, although she didn’t really know where to start. “How—how have you been?” It’s funny because with him, casual conversation was always something they both struggled at. A simple raise of her eyebrows would have asked that question just the same as her words and yet she found herself speaking instead.
“Hey there pretty lady!” The child, a carbon copy of his father, greeted cheerfully, recognizing the face from pictures his mother had. “Do you wanna play?”

“Play?” she asked, and then shrugged. Children weren’t her strong point. She understood the basics, but at times, she felt like she was awkward around them. “I’m not sure I’m fit to play…”
